Sunjay Dutt Verdict Stuns Bollywood

The entire film industry is stunned by the verdict on their beloved Sanjay Dutt, who enjoys tremendous goodwill among his colleagues.
Most of the stars feel that the sentence was too harsh. And keeping the sentiments aside, the A-list Bollywood star's time in jail will mean huge losses to the industry. At the Dutt neighbourhood in Pali Hil screen legends Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu are heartbroken"Dilip Kumar and I are heartbroken. We are very close to the Dutt family. I feel the punishment is too harsh. People have forgotten the circumstances of those times. We were getting repeated threats. We need police patrols at nights. What kind of justice is this? We don't have the strength to help Sanjay. Even Sunil Dutt is no more. Sanjay, I admire the way you are holding up," said Saira Bano. Not far away the usually outspoken director, producer Mahesh Bhatt struggles for words to express his sense of disappointment..It was in Mahesh Bhatt's Naam in 1986 that marked his successful return to Bollywood after a year-and-a-half in drug rehab."I am with Sanjay Dutt. Whatever he did was in his misguided youth. He will always have my support," said Bhatt. Many of Sanjay's close stars especially those from the cult Munnabhai series were too upset to speak to the media. Several of them even switched off their phones.
"It's too harsh. He has been through enough," said Kunal Kohli, director.
Subhash Ghai who was shooting in Switzerland sent in an SMS.
There is shock and grief the film industry. And there is also worry of financiers and producers of nearly Rs 50 crore that rides on Sanjay Dutt.

Kaafila to open in India and Pakistan

Sunny Deol starrer Kaafila will become the first film in the history of Indian cinema to get a simultaneous India-Pakistan release on August 10.

Based on a true story about human trafficking, the buzz and expectations are rising for Kaafila leading to an increase in demand for the promos in Pakistan.

After a high court Pakistan that gave full clearance to the film, more than 20 promos are screened every day in Pakistani theatres from July 27.

"We are very happy that Kaafila, a film based on human trafficking, a global concern today, is being screened in India, Pakistan and the world over at the same time. We are looking at the film forging relationships between our countries further," said film director Amitoj Maan. Mann also plays an important role in the film.

Biography of Sunjay Dutt

Sanjay Dutt born July 29, 1959 is a famous two time Filmfare Awards winner movie staractor in Bollywood and also indulges as playback singer, he is considered the ultimate macho man in the Bollywood film industry.
He is the son of a Bollywood "power couple", Nargis and Sunil Dutt. Both his parents were awarded the Padmashree, a high civilian honor in India. His father Sunil Dutt was also a politician who campaigned for the Congress Party of India. He has a daughter (by his marriage to his first wife) named Trishala who lives in New York with her grandparents and aunt. She was born on August 10, 1988 and is now currently 18 years old and is best known as the Paris Hilton of India whenever she visits due to her extravagant spending habits, poses, and popularity. Out of all the bollywood celebrity kids, Trishala Dutt is well known in New York City amongst the who's who, and in India.
He made his acting debut in the film Rocky in 1981 which was produced and directed by his father. Though Rocky was a hit it did not establish him as a star.He Vidhsteadily began to build his career, and he had many hits such as vidhaata (1982), Naam (1986), Hathyar (1989), Sadak (1991) and Saajan (1991).
His breakthrough role finally came in Subhash Ghai's Khalnayak (1993). The release of Khalnayak happened to coincide with Dutt's arrest in connection with the 1993 Mumbai Bombings. The hype surrounding the event and his convincing portrayal of the villainous role in the film gave his career a much needed boost and a filmfare nomination for best actor. Khalnayak went on to become a huge hit also partly because of the use of a popular song in the film "Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai".
Dutt retained his macho image after being released from jail and built on his steady fan following. Over the last 10 years, he has matured as an actor, with action, gangster and comedy roles being his forte.
His performances in Vaastav (1999), Mission Kashmir (2000), Munnabhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006) earned him rave reviews. His performance as a gangster in "Vaastav" earned him almost all the top awards that the industry has to offer, further cementing his place as one of the best actors in the Indian Film Industry. He along with friend and director Sanjay Gupta (Director) formed a production company called "White Feather Films". They have produced films such as Kaante (2002), Musafir (2004)and Zinda (2005) of which also star Sanjay Dutt in lead roles. His latest release "Shootout At Lokhandwala" has done very well at the box office, and is a hit according to boxofficeindia.com.
Tragedy seems to love Dutt and Dutt often seems to be actively courting tragedy. Despite getting into trouble with the law, Dutt has maintained his huge fan following, Perhaps the two main reasons that fans love this troubled star is his ability to survive and fight through the deepest tragedies of his life, and the exemplary respect that the common man in India has for both of his parents. After every setback he has managed to survive. Every time he has gone to the brink of absolute destruction, he has miraculously and sometimes unbelievably managed to claw back.
His mother died a few weeks before his first film was to be released, following which he took up drugs. After attending a rehabilitation program in the United States, a sober Dutt learned that his wife had cancer. His wife's death after a long battle with the disease was followed by a bitter custody battle between Dutt and his in-laws over the custody of his only daughter.
After resurrecting his career with the mega hit "Saajan" and his first Filmfare nomination for the best actor in a lead role, Charges were filed against the actor for his alleged involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bombings. Sanjay Dutt spent more than 18 months in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai.
After being released from jail, Dutt married Reha Pillai but the marriage did not last too long and the couple divorced in 2005 after spending the last few years apart.
His father Sunil Dutt, died in May 2005. Sunil Dutt was the sports minister of India at the time of his death.
On November 28, 2006, A special TADA court found actor Sanjay Dutt guilty under the Arms Act of possessing an illegal weapon. He was cleared, however, of the charges of terrorism and conspiracy.Dutt's bail has been extended a number of times since the ruling and is still in progress. While Sanjay was cleared of terrorism charges namely the TADA Act, one of his friends who transported the AK-56 guns for Sanjay namely Baba Chouhan was found guilty under TADA Act.
Some interesting facts about his life may be enlisted as follows:-
He has no children by his marriage to socialite Rhea Pillay.
He has a "Never Give In" sticker on his car from his days at Lawrence School, Sanawar.
His fans fondly call him "Sanju Baba".
After the success of his MunnaBhai movies,a section of the media and fans also have started to refer to him as "Munna Bhai".
The 6ÆÂ?" hulking actor is the inspiration for professional wrestler Sonjay Dutt's stage name.
He has figured in all editions of the India Today - Top 10 List of the Most influential Bollywood personalities.
His sister Anju (Namrata Dutt) is married to actor Kumar Gaurav, the son of yesteryears actor Rajendra Kumar.
His sister Priya contested and won the election for her father's constituency and is now a Member of Parliament.
His peers are among his biggest fans. Salman Khan, Zayed Khan, Fardeen Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and many more look up to Dutt as an icon.
He was the first choice to play the lead in Subhash Ghai's Hero, but after witnessing Sanjay Dutt in his drug phase during the shooting of Vidhaata, Ghai picked Jackie Shroff.

Trivia
The Sanjay Dutt-Rhea Pillai love story began when Dutt was languishing in a prison cell during the Mumbai bomb blasts trial.
When an unkempt Dutt would be taken for hearings, pictures of Rhea, holding on to her boyfriend’s finger from the wired windows of the police van, hit the front page. They spoke of true love in transient times. Indebted with gratitude and admiration, an emotional Sanjay reportedly stated, ‘Love is what Rhea did when I was in jail. The future was bleak, there was no security or commitment. But she did not let the relationship die.’
Later, Sunjay Dutt, known to be impulsive, took Rhea by surprise when he proposed to her at a Valentine’s day party. The two headed straight to a Sai-Baba mandir in Mumbai, woke the priest out of his reverie, and turned man and wife.
A couple of years later, tales of Dutt’s roving eye created rift between the duo. While, Rhea now finds solace in the Art of Living course, Sanjay has plunged into his profession like never before.
Asked about it, Sanjay says, "I have signed at least seven films in the last one year, and all of them are being shot now. I don’t know what to do with my time. So I keep working. My personal life is almost over.’
Talking about his estranged wife, he says, ‘Rhea and me will always care and be there for each other. And that’s what counts in the end. Not that we are no longer together.’

He doesn't have a personal life except his work, and he is happy about it. Till...Radhika comes into his life. She is a hardcore TV journalist and loves her work. She has left her native Mangalore and is dead certain that nothing, but nothing is going to keep her away from being the hottest young property in journalism. On the job 24/7, she conducts a sting operation during which she encounters Aditya..... They fall in love, deeply in love, but that love is negotiated around the demands of their work. Their careers remain the priority.
Can careers survive love?
Can love survive career demands?
Love takes them into domains that they had not expected, calling on them to forgo their individual pride, ego and the demands of their careers. To keep the passion of their love alive, they are called upon to sacrifice something they had not budgeted for - their passion for their careers. After several false steps, Aditya and Radhika decide - rationally - to separate their personal lives from their workspace. But that is easier said than done when both are into careers that keep them on call at the oddest of hours.
Love falters. Love can't keep up with the erratic demands of their careers. Aditya can't leave his burgeoning career opportunities when Radhika decides to take a much-awaited promotion that would take her to another city, away from Aditya, and away from love. It's not easy going for either, but they give long distance relationship a try. But the separation is not just physical-or of distance. It's a separation of minds, of different demands.
Can Aditya and Radhika find in themselves again the same passion that brought them together the first time?

Name : Vidya Balan

Debut Film : Parineeta (2005)

->Zee Cine Award Best Female Debut, Parineeta (2005) ,

BiograpyhyVidya Balan, the Tamilian Iyer girl from Palghat (Kerala), grew up in Mumbai, did her early years of education at St. Antony's School and later graduated in Sociology from St. Xavier's College.

While she was doing her MA from Mumbai University, she got an offer in a Malayalam film titled 'Chakram' with Mohanlal. Unfortunately, the film was shelved mid-way because of some issues between the director and Mohanlal. Then Vidya had to wait for a few more years to make her movie debut.

In 1998, this elegant beauty started her career as a model in Surf Excel advertisement. Later she appeared in more than 25 ad films like Ponds, Bajaj etc. Before getting her big break in Bollywood, she acted in a few music videos with Euphoria, Shubha Mudgal, Pankaj Udhas etc. She was also seen in TV serials such as Ashok Pandit's 'Hanste Khelte' and Ektaa Kapoor’s 'Hum Paanch' as well as a Bengali movie 'Bhalo Theko' with actor Joy Sengupta. She won the best actress award, 'Anand Lok Puraskar' for the movie in Kolkata.

In 2005, she debuted in Bollywood with Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Parineeta, directed by Pradeep Sarkar. It was nothing short of a challenge for her to capture the grace, elegance and subtle nuances of her character Lolita. She succeeded in making the role perfect with her natural beauty and talent. But it was not an easy feat for Vidya to get her Bollywood break. She had to go through 40 screen tests and 17 make-up shoots before she was chosen for the lead role in this film. After that, she read Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s book on which the movie was based and saw the 1953 celluloid version of ‘Parineeta' by filmmaker Bimal Roy. She has a number of future projects lined up for release.

Vidya has a very traditional Indian look in contrast to most of today's Bollywood starlets. She is associated with AmFar (Americans for AIDS Research) and Hale House, a home for children born with HIV and those affected by drug addiction. She also involves herself with the Harvard AIDS Institute, by hosting forums and participating in events throughout the year. No wonder that Vidya Balan is one of the most talked about names in Bollywood today.

Personal Quotes
"Neither of my first two Malayalam films got completed, and I walked out of the third, a Tamil film, because I was not comfortable. I was replaced in another Tamil film with the excuse that I could not act. They made me feel ugly to the point where I was scared to look in the mirror. In retrospect I thank God, and by God's grace today the going is good."

Himesh Reshammiya Exposed On Koffee With Karan

Love him or loath him, but you cant ignore him.... Yes I am talking about the Nasal Wonder Himesh Reshammiya who will make an appearance in Koffee With Karan this Sunday. The singer/song-writer/actor gets candid and here are some excerpts.

Karan Johar: Firstly, congratulations on the super success of your film (Aap Kaa Surroor). I know a large section of the industry was surprised. Were you expecting this kind of success?

Himesh: I just believed in God, destiny and somewhere, I think everyone just prayed for me. That is something that worked for me.

Karan: By everyone, you mean who, large sections of the industry were not praying for you...

Himesh: No, no... Only that one percent of people just felt that this can not happen, a singer not a very good looking guy...

Karan: As in, not conventional looking... not hero material?

Himesh: I think you are being nice to me. But it was something that was unprecedented when the film started. People did say, 'Paagal ho gaya hai.' I understand. But when the film was declared a hit, people realised.

Karan: There were particular people, who were somehow targeting you. Is there anyone kind of person that you felt resentment towards?

Himesh: No. I do not feel resentment towards anyone because when you try something which is unprecedented then people are going to... until you prove it. When the film released, it was declared a hit. Many people called me and congratulated me. They said that they felt it wouldn't work so it's just that I was doing something new, something different. It takes time to accept something that is unconventional.

Karan: Have you heard that behind your back, there are other singers who are making fun of you
Himesh: Yes, of course. Why not? But, you know, when they meet me, kitne composers ke saath milne ka mauka milta hain pehli baar. Phir woh opinion badal dete hain.

Karan: But you keep very quiet about your wife. You don't talk about her?

Himesh: Because she is a very simple girl.

Karan: It's not that you feel that your image gets affected?

Himesh: No, the first time when I was asked whether I was married, I said yes.

Karan: And you have a son?

Himesh: Yes, I have a son.

Karan: What's his name?

Himesh: Swayam.

In 2003 he gave his emotionally charged performance as playing an obsessed lover in "Tere Naam" that translated into good reviews and a good run at the box office. He has not only managed to revive his career, but also to restore the confidence of his producers and distributors alike.

His work was noticed internationally in the movie Phir Milenge (2004) where he played the role of an AIDS patient. It was well appreciated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for presenting the problems of AIDS patient in today's world.

Cash Release Delayed by a week

Cash, starring Ajay Devgan, Zayed Khan and Riteish Deshmukh, was cleared by the censor board earlier this week with a UA certificate. However, the film can only be released as per the new schedule after the court's clearance.
Hassled and tired, director Anubhav Sinha said: "The last week has been an ordeal. We've been in and out of court trying to get Cash released on time. Unfortunately, we couldn't make it this Friday. Never mind. Next week we'll be on, and all the stress would be vindicated."
A financial and legal tussle between the producers of the Anubhav Sinha -directed Cash has taken its toll on the slick flick's release, delaying it by a week - from July 27 to August 3.One of the producers, Anish Ranjan, told IANS: "It's a big blow for us. We had selected July 27 because we had two clear weeks (advantage), what with Pritish Nandy Communications Bow Barracks Forever releasing on July 27 and Anil Kapoor's Gandhi My Father falling into an entirely different genre. Now with the film releasing on August 3, one precious week is lost. The publicity and posters for this Friday's release were on full throttle.

Partner heading for a huge Hit

Partner was always expected to get a big opening but the sort of business it has done till now is way above expectations. According to the producers, the film grossed 26 crore in India in its first three days.

The film did see usual drop in collections on Monday but nothing alarming and is expected to see the weekdays out with collections ranging from 45-65%.

As of now the film is certain to be a hit unless something very dramatic happens and collections just collapse which is unlikely. The next two weeks will determine whether the film becomes a superhit or better.

If the film can show the regular 50% fall in collections with Cash releasing on Friday then it may well be on to superhit status. That is a feat achieved by no film in the hindi film market this year except the Hollywood release Spiderman 3.

The overseas collections are well above expectations as the masala fare was not expected to do that well but as of now the film is heading for 17-20 crore run from that circuit as well.

Amitabh turns Gambler

Amitabh Bachchan is all set to portray a gambler's role for director Leena Yadav's Teen Patti. The film also stars Arshad Warsi.

Yadav had earlier directed Bachchan's daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai in the rather unusual Shabd.

The Big B have to be adept at playing cards to essay his character.

"And I'm terrible with cards!" Bachchan exclaimed. He has earlier played a cards whiz in Shakti Samanta's The Great Gambler. But that was deacades ago.

So can his co-star Arshad help him here?

"Not at all!" chuckles Arshad. "I can't play cards ... nor do I gamble. But I can fake anything!"

But he sure is looking forward to working with the superstar.

"I've waited really long to do a film with Mr Bachchan. Though we've done an ad together we've never really shared screen space," he said.

Synopsis

A train pulls into C.S.T. station and two young men step off. It’s their very first visit to Mumbai city. Only they are not here to visit. They have arrived with dreams of buying Mumbai out.
Poor deluded fools, you might think… but that’s only till the first time you run into them. After that, it’ll be clear enough who’s deluded and who has just been made the fool. For this is a pair of street toughs par excellence… Jai, the younger of the two looks up to Veeru for guidance. Veeru in turn looks out for him. The pair’s loyalty to one another is absolute.

Virendra Chavan (Ajay Devgan) and Jai Ranade (Prashant Raj) grew up in Latur together, where they came to be known to their town folk as Veeru & Jai. From their early days, the young men admired success and strength and sought in every which way to emulate it.Veeru went to work as a bodyguard for Sharad Patil, the local political heavyweight. But, when Patil went to jail in a scam, he lost his job. It was then that idea of coming to Mumbai took his fancy. As expected, his prodigy Jai tagged along. So Mumbai it was…
Within a week of their arrival on the recommendation of an old acquaintance of theirs called Soorma (Rajpal Yadav) who runs a dance bar, they found work with Shambhul Seth, a criminal with heavy underworld connections and also high on the police scanner. In his pursuit of Shambhul, the Inspector Ranveer (Mohanlal) came into contact with Veeru and Jai. On meeting them, he realized that these were no hardened criminals.Small time hoodlums, perhaps but deep inside their values were still intact. He chose to appeal to the honesty in them.He exposed them to Shambhul’s criminal past. Veeru and Jai were surprised by this. They agreed to help in whatever way they could.
The inspector in the process of trying to get Shambhul got into a deadly trap and both Veeru and Jai in a show of extraordinary courage and strength managed to rescue him and managed to finish off Shambhul seth. But in the bargain, Veeru and Jai had to be arrested as well for associating with a criminal and for a while went to jail.
Much later, when the inspector needed help in his hunt for Gabbar Singh (Amitabh Bachchan), his brief impression of these two young men returned to him. Since he could not expect the police to help in a quest for personal revenge, and his principles would not allow him to turn to the underworld for help, he decided to enlist the help of Veeru and Jai.

Sholay renamed to Aag

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s much hyped remake of Sholay was re-titled as Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. Delhi High court has approved the release of the remake of Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay by changing the title of the film.

Delhi High Court has approved his films new name and also ordered him to change all character names. The most popular character of the film Gabbar Singh will be called Babban Singh, Basanti renamed to Ghungroo, Veeru to Virendra Chavan, Radha to Devi and Jai to Jai Ranade. While the other characters from the original film like Soorma Bhopali and Sambha are changed to Rambhabhai and Tambhe.

Earlier, producer G. P. Sippy's grandson Sascha Sippy and Shan Uttam Singh had filed a lawsuit to permanently restrain Varma from releasing the film. The court has asked them to push their remaining claims in this matter after watching the film.

Sunny Deol to direct a Film

The success of the Deols' family-film Apne has given the sleeping lion Sunny Deol a chance to rise and shine as never before. Sunny has taken several hard decisions. One of them is to turn director with a film called Man.

"My Apne writer Neeraj Pathak narrated this subject and I instantly fell for it. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the project on the road because I got busy with Apne. Now that Apne has been accepted so warmly, I've gathered the courage to revive that project. And yes I'll be directing and producing Man along with Neeraj."

Neeraj will be billed as the co-director of Man. Explains Sunny, "We're working so closely on every aspect of the project, from script to casting, it'd be tough to draw a line between Neeraj's creative input and mine. Therefore, the credit titles will read our names as co-directors."

Interestingly, Sunny has given the film industry several talented directors including Raj Kumar Santoshi and Gurinder Chaddha(who made the aborted London for Sunny). "It's another matter that they've started with me and moved on," laughs Sunny mirthlessly.

Even more interestingly Sunny is the only star from his generation to have taken the plunge as a director. "I directed Dillagi with my brother Bobby and me in the lead eight years ago .I've always been interested in being behind the camera. I took keen interest in the scripting and other technicalities of my acting debut Betaab. Today I think I'm fully prepared to direct.

Earlier, Critics have highly acclaimed Sunn'y directorial debut Dillagi. People even compared him with Raj kapoor, to direct himself ina film. Lets see, what sunny has to offer in Man.

Review : Partner - Tickle to laugh

Partner -
There is very good news and a very bad news for David Dhawan. The very good news is that his latest film PARTNER is opened to full houses. Many in the audience are laughing throughout. The very bad news is that the film is plain average.

There is some common principles one has to follow when one go to watch bollywood comedies. Keep your brain at home, don’t ask for logic, if you didn’t find a story still you laugh etc. Surely you have to follow all these principles before you plan to watch this movie. Even after that, you may find yourself going crazy as things turnaround. [Read full review]

censor fee hiked

The central government of India has approved the proposal of Sharmila Tagore for a significant hike in film certification fees. She had demanded a hike of 300 per cent from the current fee and has got that and more.

It may be good news for the censor board and its chairperson Sharmila Tagore but it's bad tiding for the film industry at large.

Confirming the move, a senior Information and Broadcasting official said that before this the maximum amount taken from the producer of a feature film as cerification fee was Rs 4200.

The fee was earleir hiked in 1966 and 1983. According to the new guidlines, the average certification fee for a feature film will now be in the range of Rs 14,000 to Rs 20,000. In addition, producers will be charged a screening fee of about Rs 1,000 as well.

The decision will not only the feature film industry but also the small-budget regional and educational documentary film industry.

Tagore in her letter to the ministry had written about the poor financial condition of the censor board. She said that the fee collected by the censor board was so little that it hardly met the expenses to censor a particular film.

The certification process requires at least four members of the advisory panel board to watch a film before giving it an U, U/A or A certificate. A sum of Rs 500 is given to each member as sitting fee. If other expenses are added, the cost overshoots the fee charged by the board.

Three Foreign babes in Kaafila

Sunny Deol’s forthcoming movie Kaafila has three foreign heroines – one Bulgarian, one Afghani and one Pakistani.

It is not that the film’s director Ammtoje Mann wanted to create a casting coup and that is why he signed three non-Indian girls in his film that raises the issue of global illegal immigration.

Mann says the three actresses were chosen because they suited the characters that were part of the story.

Kaafila has actress Sana Nawaz playing a feisty Afghan girl who can ride horses, speak the local language Pashto and also fight the Taliban.

Then there is Bulgarian model Paulina Stoynova who plays a Russian girl. She is paired opposite Sunny Deol in the film.

The third heroine is Mona Lisa, a well-known Pakistani actress.

Ammtoje Mann describes Kaafila as an international film. The movie has been shot in Ladakh, Manali, Bulgaria, Ukraine, UK and USA.

Kaafila is set to release on July 27.

Synopsis Gandhi has always been compelling, complex and strangely contemporary. Sir Richard Attenborough introduced "Mahatma" the great soul to the West and the world remains grateful to him. I grew up understanding Gandhi through others: till I discovered a deep wound he carried in his heart. Somewhere in the shadows of this great man lived his son, roaming the streets of India like a beggar. Converting to Islam as a rebellion, reconverting to Hinduism as a penance and finally drinking himself to death. Mahatma Gandhi could transform the soul of a nation but could not save the soul of his own son.

The unfolding of a personal tragedy against the racial hatred in South Africa and colonial humiliation in India moved me deeply. Finally my search to know the human side of Gandhi took me to South Africa, to different parts of India, libraries, scholars and his immediate family members. I then decided to make a film about a principled father and an unfortunate son. To me, Gandhi became a greater human being as he struggled personally, socially and politically. But always put his principles and quest for human dignity above everything else.
